In Boise, Idaho, Brandon Horine’s first day of removing shingles was also his last. Brandon was removing shingles from a residential roof when he fell to the ground suffering severe brain damage that eventually caused his death several days later. Investigator’s for OSHA cited Horine’s employer, RP Construction, for failing to provide proper fall protection equipment and for failing to properly train employees on fall protection before roofing activities began. Total penalties for RP Construction amount to $13,971.00.
Falls account for nearly 40 percent of all deaths in the construction industry, making falls the deadliest of all industry hazards. Sadly, falls are 100% preventable with proper training and safeguards.
OSHA requires that an effective form of fall protection be in use when workers perform construction activities 6 feet or more above the next lower level.
Falls can be prevented in three simple steps:
PLAN ahead to get the job done safely
PROVIDE the right equipment
TRAIN everyone to use the equipment safely
