Compliance Deadline for HAZCOM Standard

OSHA – In early 2013, OSHA updated the HAZCOM Standard to align with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). Through this update, OSHA provides a common approach to hazard classification and communication. The overall goal of the change was to provide cost savings for American businesses as well as increase the overall safety of American workers.

The deadline for employee training was December 1, 2013, and chemical manufacturers, importers and distributors were required to comply with safety data sheet and labeling provisions by June 1, 2015.

Other employers that handle and trade such products are required to update their written HAZCOM program and meet the new requirements for workplace labeling and employee training by June 1, 2016.

With the final deadline for compliance quickly approaching, it is best to ensure you have made the necessary steps to avoid citations. Double check with your Safety Department that all hazard communications have been updated and your company is prepared to meet the new standards. The Integrated Group recommends companies keep two copies of their SDS on hand, one electronic and one physical. These must be easily accessible to all employees working around chemicals.
